“I didn’t say no, but I didn’t really know what to do. I just kind of froze.”

They blame themselves for “failing” to resist. They feel ashamed.

The Painful Truth

Every single day single women, young girls, mothers and women from all walks of life are being assaulted, molested, and violated. The streets, public transport, public spaces in particular have become the territory of the hunters.

Why many sexually assaulted women don’t fight or yell?

In the midst of sexual assault, the brain’s fear circuitry dominates. The prefrontal cortex can be severely impaired, and all that’s left may be reflexes and habits.

Freezing occurs when the amygdala – a crucial structure in the brain’s fear circuitry – detects an attack and signals the brainstem to inhibit movement. It happens in a flash, automatically and beyond conscious control.

How our body responds to fear.

The body is literally paralysed by fear – unable to move, speak, or cry out. The body goes rigid. Hands may go numb.

None of these responses – in women or men – entails consent or cowardice.

Driven by this newfound inspiration, I delved into research, exploring bamboo and its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Realizing bamboo's rigidity and inability to bend, I decided to use scrap bicycle parts for the initial models, replacing the metal frames with bamboo while keeping metal joints for added stability.

I took my father's help to turn the idea into reality. We spent countless nights working together and ended up creating three bicycles:

  • A large-sized bicycle for adults

  • A medium-sized bicycle for young kids

  • A small tricycle for small children

Each bicycle showcased the strength and sustainability of bamboo, providing an eco-friendly transportation solution.

Through this project, I discovered how traditional materials like bamboo can be innovatively used in our modern life, and the profound impact that eco-friendly solutions can have on our environment and communities.
